Do you know what expression I do not understand? This is something a lot of people say that almost makes me cringe.
"In my heart of hearts"
Huh? Where did this come from? Why, oh why is it used?
We have one heart. Juuuuust one.
I know they are not meaning it literally. I still don't love it. What do they mean when they are saying it?
Fix it.

funny. I've never actually heard someone use it. "could you use that in a sentence? please." I don't get what it means.

Mmmm...is this in response to our dinner conversation last night? I totally dropped that phrase.
Curious myself, I looked up its meaning. The origin of the phrase is Shakespearean.
Hamlet said: "Give me that man that is not passion's slave, and I will wear him in my heart's core, ay, in my heart of heart, as I do thee."
It basically means to say "in my heart's core" or at the "center of my heart," thereby signifying the most tender part of our symbolic emotional center.
Where the phrase has been bastardized is by saying "in my heart of hearts (plural)." This is not the original quote, but is somewhat more colloquially recognized.
Please don't post this as it probably ruins the intent of your post...let's just say this is "just between you and me." :)
